CP42 Certificates › Guides

What is a CP42 certificate?

A CP42 is the gas safety record issued after a Gas Safe registered engineer inspects the gas installation in a commercial catering kitchen. It is the document insurers, landlords, environmental health officers and fire risk assessors usually ask to see.

What the CP42 covers

The CP42 records the inspection and testing of the gas installation in a fixed commercial kitchen. That normally includes every gas catering appliance, the gas pipework, the ventilation and extraction, the gas interlock system and the safety devices such as flame failure devices and the emergency isolation valve.

The engineer records what was checked, the results of the tests and whether each appliance is safe to use. If something is unsafe, it is recorded, and the engineer will explain what needs to be put right.

Who needs a CP42

Any business that cooks with gas in a fixed commercial kitchen, including:

If your kitchen is in a food truck, trailer or other mobile unit, you need a CP44 instead.

Is a CP42 a legal requirement?

The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 require gas appliances and pipework in workplaces to be maintained in a safe condition, and the work must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer who is competent in commercial catering. A CP42 is the standard way of recording that this has been done.

In practice, most insurers, landlords and local authorities expect to see an in-date CP42, and an annual inspection is the accepted standard for commercial kitchens.

How much does a CP42 cost?

Prices vary across the UK depending on the company and the number of appliances. With CP42 Certificates the price is a fixed £250 + VAT, with no call-out fee and no travel charge, and your record is issued on the day of a successful inspection. See our CP42 cost guide.
