Gas interlocks in commercial kitchens
A gas interlock links your kitchen's extraction system to the gas supply. If the extraction fan is not running, the interlock shuts off the gas to the cooking appliances.
Why it matters
Gas appliances produce combustion fumes, including carbon monoxide. Without the extraction running, those fumes can build up in the kitchen. The interlock makes sure the gas can only flow while the ventilation is working.
Do I need one?
Under the British Standard for commercial catering gas installations (BS 6173), new and altered installations with mechanical extraction are expected to have an interlock. Older kitchens without one may be recorded as needing attention during a CP42 inspection.
Interlocks and your CP42
The engineer will test that the interlock shuts off the gas when the fan stops and that it restores safely. A faulty interlock is one of the most common reasons for a CP42 fail. Our inspection stickers are placed next to the interlock panel, so you always know when the next check is due.
Frequently asked questions
Can I override the interlock?
No. Bypassing an interlock is dangerous and may affect your insurance.
What if my interlock fails the test?
The engineer will explain the problem and what needs to be repaired before a record can be issued.
